Jim Kershner’s this day in history

From our archives, 100 years ago

The Spokesman-Review printed this somewhat awkward opening to its editorial welcoming a delegation of Chinese businessmen: “Welcome, men of China, to Spokane! We can neither spell nor pronounce your names correctly, but you will forgive our ignorance and we assure you that we appreciate the privilege and honor of having you as our guests.”

The 15 members of the Chinese commerce commission were touring the area with the goal of expanding China’s import and export trade. The delegation was touring the region’s orchards, farms and industrial sites. A grand banquet was planned at a Davenport Hotel ballroom, which had been decorated with Chinese themes.

The Spokesman-Review expressed optimism that the delegation would place orders for many Inland Northwest products. The paper said the delegates believe “that their visit should multiply our percentage of direct exportations many times.”

“The vitality of Chinese culture is one of the marvels of history,” the editorial said. “… The progressiveness of modern China demonstrates that the youngest of republics is destined to become a force to be reckoned with by Japan, Europe and America.”
