Obituary: Mcelroy, Virginia C. “Ginger”

McELROY, Virginia C. “Ginger” (Age 85) Died June 24, 2015 from pneumonia complications.

Born April 1, 1930 in Ritzville, Washington to Clarence and Caroline Nissen, she graduated from Ione High School in 1948 and married her husband, Jack D. McElroy, the same year.

She worked in the sales departments at the Crescent Store in Spokane and J. C. Penney in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

She retired as manager of the marine department of Tongass Trading Company in Ketchikan, Alaska.

During her retirement, she enjoyed gardening and spending winters in Arizona with family friend and caregiver, Betty Spurgeon.

Ginger is survived by her sister Lorraine Perry of Ketchikan, AK, her brother Herb (and Carolyn) Nissen of Milwaukie, Oregon, two sons, Jack (and Gayle) McElroy of Post Falls, ID and Phillip (and Janis) of Cusick, WA, a daughter, Kara (Joe) Steele of Kenai, AK, several grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ginger was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Jack D. McElroy, her parents, and brothers, Donald, Wesley, and C. W. (Buck) Nissen.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 1st, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, WA.

Graveside service will follow at the Newport Cemetery.
