Hawks rally by Chiefs

PORTLAND – The Portland Winterhawks scored five goals in the third period in rallying to beat the Spokane Chiefs 8-6 in a Western Hockey League game on Sunday.

The loss wasted a hat trick by Liam Stewart, who also had an assist.

Goals by Kolten Olynek, Stewart and Riley Whittingham gave Spokane a 3-0 lead after the first period and Stewart added a power-play score early in the second period. Portland came back with three straight goals before Stewart notched his second short-handed goal of the game for a 5-3 advantage. Stewart has 25 goals this season.

In the third period, Portland scored two goals before Adam Helewka temporarily put the Chiefs back on top on a power-play goal at 7:16 of the final period.

Chase De Leo had two goals for the Winterhawks while Oliver Bjorkstrand picked up five points with a goal and four assists. Bjorkstrand leads the WHL with 108 points and has scored in 17 straight games.

Calder Brooks had three assists and Nick Charif two for Spokane.

Tyson Verhelst made 34 saves in goal for Spokane.

The Chiefs close the regular season with four games in five nights beginning Wednesday with a matchup with the Winterhawks at the Spokane Arena. The Chiefs lead the season series with Portland 4-3.
