In brief: Valleyfest hosts pageant event
SPOKANE VALLEY – Valleyfest is sponsoring a pageant for sophomore and junior high school girls enrolled in a Spokane Valley school.
The winner will be hospitality host for other teens at Valleyfest and attend a variety of events over summer.
The pageant consists of a panel interview, a speech on the topic “What does Spokane Valley Mean to Me?” and an onstage question. There’s a cash prize.
The pageant is free to enter.

Grant to aid plan
to improve rail area
HILLYARD – The city of Spokane has received a $200,000 Brownfields grant from the EPA to revitalize the Hillyard Industrial Area.
That property has been deteriorating since the rail yard closed in the 1960s.
The grant will be used to make a plan to get rid of contamination and get the area ready for redevelopment.
Organizations such as the Hillyard Neighborhood Council, the Greater Hillyard Business Association and the Organizations of Northeast Spokane have all played roles in getting the grant.

Pot legalization subject of meeting
SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is holding an educational meeting about the legalization of marijuana from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Dishman Hills High School, 115 S. University Road, Suite A.
Speakers include executive director of the Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council Linda Thompson and the Sheriff’s Office’s Esther Larsen, who is project director for the Spokane County Drug Endangered Children Project.
Topics include prevention resources, networking and best practices in dealing with marijuana.
It costs $10 to attend. Teachers can earn three clock hours.

Easter Bunny at downtown mall
DOWNTOWN – The Easter Bunny will be at River Park Square starting Friday.
The bunny will be available daily for photos through April 4.
Photo hours this week are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through March 26.
The Easter bunny will be in the atrium, 808 W. Main Ave.

Native plants focus of free seminar
MANITO PARK – The Friends of Manito will present a free seminar on Spokane’s native plants at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Manito Meeting Room, 4 W. 21st Ave.
Eastern Washington University Master Gardener Eva Lusk will talk about how to include native plants in a garden and which are most likely to thrive.

Public sculpture to be unveiled
SPOKANE VALLEY – Dance of the Sun and Moon, a 16 ½-foot tall bronze sculpture, will be unveiled March 26 at 4 p.m. at the northeast corner of Mansfield Road and Discovery Place, near Mirabeau Park.
The sculpture was designed by Jerry McKellar and is the third piece of public art donated by the Spokane Valley Arts Council.

Junior Lilac Parade needs volunteers
DOWNTOWN – Rotaract Club of Spokane is seeking volunteers for the annual Junior Lilac Parade.
This year’s parade is May 9, starting at 10 a.m.
Volunteers are needed to help with lineup, parking, stage and tent setup, and other tasks. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt and be invited to a breakfast hosted by Rotaract Club.
