Hispanics underrepresented in Spokane traffic stops

Due to a reporter’s error, Wednesday’s story about a study on the race of people Spokane police interact with incorrectly summarized the findings about Hispanic residents. The study found that Hispanic residents are underrepresented in police stops, and that underrepresentation was statistically significant. Hispanic residents made up just 3.3 percent of police contacts in the study, though they are 5.3 percent of Spokane’s population. These numbers were transposed in the article, leading to an incorrect conclusion. The article’s numbers about black and Native American residents being overrepresented in police stops were correct.
