Friday’s NCAA tournament capsules

East regional

At Charlotte, N.C.

(7) Michigan State 70

(10) Georgia 63

Denzel Valentine scored 16 points and went 6 of 6 at the free throw line in the final 30 seconds to help the Spartans hold off the Bulldogs on Friday. Travis Trice scored 15 points and Branden Dawson had a strong second half for Michigan State (24-11), which answered a push from Georgia. Valentine’s free throws were critical as Georgia (21-12) rallied to make it a one-possession game with less than 30 seconds to play.

(2) Virginia 79

(15) Belmont 67

Malcolm Brogdon scored 22 points, Justin Anderson re-emerged as a scoring threat and the Cavaliers survived another opening-round scare, defeating the Bruins. Anderson had 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting and Anthony Gill added 16 points for Virginia (30-3). Belmont (22-11) had clawed to within two behind 25 points from Crag Bradshaw, but the Cavaliers outscored the Bruins 17-7 over the final 4:37 of the game.

At Coumbus, Ohio.

(3) Oklahoma 69

(14) Albany 60

TaShawn Thomas powered his way to 18 points inside and versatile Buddy Hield added 15 to lead the Sooners past the Great Danes. Peter Hooley had 15 points, Evan Singletary 13, Sam Rowley 12 and Ray Sanders 11 for Albany (24-9). The Sooners (23-10), who led wire to wire, hit 7 of 24 behind the arc. A 7-1 run gave the Sooners an early lead and they expanded it to 37-28 at halftime.

(11) Dayton 66

(6) Providence 53

Dyshawn Pierre scored 20 points and the Flyers rode a loud home-crowd advantage to victory over the Friars. Providence (22-12) could not overcome early foul trouble on Big East player of the year Kris Dunn or a Dayton (27-8) team buoyed by a legion of fans that made the 80-mile trip to Columbus. Dunn finished with 11 points before fouling out. LaDontae Henton had 18.

At Seattle

(5) Northern Iowa 71

(10) Wyoming 54

Paul Jesperson led five Panthers players in double figures with 16 points, Seth Tuttle added 14 and UNI held off the comeback bid by the Cowboys for a victory. Northern Iowa (31-3) built a 21-point lead after scoring 11 of the first 12 points to start the second half. That huge lead was whittled to seven points twice but Wyoming could get no closer. Larry Nance Jr. led Wyoming (25-10) with 16 points, but had one point and one shot in the first half before coming alive in the second.

(4) Louisville 57

(13) UC Irvine 55

Freshman Quentin Snider hit the winning free throws and Terry Rozier made the saving steal to help the Cardinals top the Anteaters and send the tournament’s tallest player packing. With the game tied, Snider snagged a rebound in the corner off an Irvine miss and drew a foul. He made the free throws with 8.9 seconds left and UC Irvine (21-13) never got a final shot, thanks to Rozier’s pick. Wayne Blackshear had 19 points for Louisville (25-8). Anteaters 7-foot-6 center Mamadou Ndiaye finished with 12 points and five rebounds.

West regional

At Omaha, Neb.

(8) Oregon 79

(9) Oklahoma State 73

Joseph Young scored 27 points, Elgin Cook added 18 and the Ducks beat the Cowboys. Dillon Brooks had 17 points for Oregon (26-9), and Dana Altman got the win in his return to Omaha and the same building where he once coached Creighton. Le’Bryan Nash had 18 points before fouling out in his final game for Oklahoma State (18-14).

(1) Wisconsin 86

(16) Coastal Carolina 72

Big Ten player of the year Frank Kaminsky had 27 points and 12 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season, and the Badgers defeated the Chanticleers. Sam Dekker had 20 points and Nigel Hayes added 15 against a Coastal Carolina (24-10) team that gave a game effort but had no answer for the 7-foot Kaminsky. Wisconsin (32-3) outscored the Chanticleers 40-24 in the lane.

South regional

At Charlotte, N.C.

(1) Duke 85

(16) Robert Morris 56

Quinn Cook scored 22 points to help the Blue Devils get off to a torrid start and beat the Colonials. Freshman Jahlil Okafor added 21 as Duke (30-4) wasted little time getting its offense revving, hitting its first seven shots and 12 of 15 to quickly build a big lead. That’s not to say everything went smoothly for Duke, a team with half of its eight scholarship players making their tournament debut. Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski furiously burned a timeout after Okafor blew a reverse dunk, while Robert Morris (20-15) showed plenty of fight and kept hanging around for the first part of the second half before the Blue Devils finally put the game out of reach.

(8) San Diego State 76

(9) St. John’s 64

JJ O’Brien scored 18 points, Dwayne Polee II added 15 points on five 3-pointers and the Aztecs defeated the Red Storm. Skylar Spencer added 10 points and seven rebounds for San Diego State (27-8). Sir’Dominic Pointer had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and D’Angelo Harrison added 18 points for St. John’s (21-11), which failed in its quest to win its first tournament game since 2000.

At Seattle

(2) Gonzaga 85

(15) North Dakota State 76

Kyle Wiltjer scored 23 points to lift the Bulldogs to victory over the Bison. Kevin Pangos had 18 points for Gonzaga (33-2), which is making its 17th straight NCAA tournament appearance but has gone five straight seasons without a trip to the Sweet 16. Dexter Werner had a career-high 22 points for North Dakota State (23-10).

(7) Iowa 83

(10) Davidson 52

Aaron White scored 13 straight points as part of the Hawkeye’s 18-3 run early in the second half, and Iowa rolled past the Wildcats. White finished with 26 points as Iowa (22-11) used its significant height advantage to overwhelm Davidson. Jack Gibbs and Peyton Aldridge scored 14 to lead the Wildcats (24-8). Iowa was a question entering the tournament after getting knocked out of the Big Ten tournament by Penn State, the 13th place team in the conference. Any doubt was erased with a strong first half and White’s performance in the final 20 minutes.

Midwest regional

At Omaha, Neb.

(2) Kansas 75

(15) New Mexico State 56

Frank Mason III scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack, and the Jayhawks cruised to victory over the Aggies. Perry Ellis added nine points for Kansas (27-8). DK Eldridge had 11 points for New Mexico State (23-11). Kansas shot holes in the Aggies’ unorthodox zone, going 9 of 13 from behind the arc.

(7) Wichita State 81

(10) Indiana 76

Fred VanVleet matched his career high with 27 points, Ron Baker made big free throws late, and the Shockers defeated the Hoosiers. Baker scored 15, making 7 of 8 free throws in the last 2 minutes to allow Wichita State to hold off Indiana (20-14). Freshman reserve Zach Brown had eight of his career-high 11 points in the second half for the Shockers (29-4).

At Columbus, Ohio

(4) Maryland 65

(13) Valparaiso 62

Dez Wells converted an offensive rebound into a three-point play with 1:44 left and Varun Ram stripped away Valparaiso’s last chance as the Terrapins held off the determined Crusaders. Wells finished with 14 points for Maryland (28-6). The Crusaders were down 3 with one last chance, but Ram reached in and swiped the ball away. Alec Peters led Valpo (28-6) with 18 points.

(5) West Virginia 68

(12) Buffalo 62

Tarik Phillip hit a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left while the shot clock was winding down, adding the clinching points as the Mountaineers held off the Bulls. Devin Williams, who led West Virginia (24-9) with 17 points and nine rebounds, hit two free throws with 2:10 left to give his team the lead for good. Buffalo (23-10) did not score over the final 2:42.
