Dodgers’ Ryu mulling surgery

The Dodgers are considering surgery for injured starter Hyun-Jin Ryu, who has yet to pitch this season.

The No. 3 starter has been out because of shoulder inflammation since March. The South Korean left-hander hasn’t responded to rest.

Andrew Friedman, president of baseball operations, said Tuesday on a conference call he’s been thinking for a while that Ryu won’t return because it’s easier to react the other way if he does.

Friedman says team doctors are discussing the next possible step for Ryu, which could include surgery.

“It hasn’t progressed as quickly as we all hoped,” Friedman said. “It’s not a totally clear-cut, black-and-white issue. It’s more involved than that.”

Ryu was 14-7 with a 3.38 ERA last year. He signed a $36 million, six-year deal in December 2012.

Tanaka to make rehab start

Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka is slated to throw about 45 pitches in a minor league rehab start at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.

The Japanese right-hander hasn’t pitched since April 23 because of a strained right forearm and tendinitis in that wrist.

He threw a bullpen session in Washington on Monday.

As for how many rehab appearances Tanaka might make, manager Joe Girardi said: “It’s a decision that we’ll make after each start – when we feel that he’s ready to go. I’m not going to put a number on it. Let’s just see how he does with the 45 and decide what’s next after that.”
