Four possibilities for new WSU baseball coach

Washington State athletic director Bill Moos says that he will not discuss the details of his search for a new baseball coach, which he expects to complete as soon as possible. But don’t be surprised if WSU’s next skipper is one of the following four people (in no particular order):

Gregg Swenson

Pitching has been WSU’s strength for some time, thanks in large part to pitching coach Gregg Swenson. Several of WSU’s pitching records have been broken under Swenson’s watch and the Cougars routinely have some of the Pac-12’s best hurlers.

Joe Ross

Currently WSU’s hitting coach. Ross hasn’t been a head coach in some time, though he was a successful skipper at the NAIA and junior college level. Ross has nearly two decades of experience as a top assistant at the Pac-12 level and has a reputation for recruiting. He was also a Mariners scout from 2010-14.

Scott Brosius

The former major league All-Star announced Saturday night that he will not return to Linfield, where he lead the Wildcats to a national championship in 2014, in order to seek a new coaching challenge. A chance to coach in the Pac-12 could be just what Brosius is looking for.

Travis Jewett

The current Vanderbilt assistant has coached at Arizona State, Washington and WSU, where he spent five seasons and helped lead the Cougars to NCAA tournament berths in 2009 and 2010. The Cougars went 1-23 against Pac-12 competition during Jewett’s first year in Pullman, they went 19-8 and finished second during his last.
