Metallic Black was recently named the Car Color of the Year during New York’s glam-packed fashion week, based on search activity on the auto-shopping site Autotrader in Atlanta, Georgia. During the first six months of the year, one out of every four new-car searches on the site was for a black car. “The slick, shiny nature of well-executed black paint can lend a classy or upscale vibe even to less expensive cars,” says Brian Moody, executive editor at Autotrader. “Bold colors like black are often popular because they’re timeless - think little black dress or the enduring style of a black tuxedo.” But no matter which hue they might prefer, a consumer’s color choice is typically more than just a passing fancy. More than three-quarters of shoppers Autotrader surveyed in a separate poll said they’d put off a new car purchase if a given model were unavailable in the color they desired
