Obituary: Hendren, Wayne A.

HENDREN, Wayne A. Feb. 11, 1926 - Nov. 9, 2015 Wayne was born in Bremerton, WA.

His family moved to Spokane at age 4.

Wayne attended Logan, Bemis and Rogers schools.

While in high school, in 1942, he was an All City Football Split End.

Wayne enlisted in the Navy on June 17, 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII, earning the rank of 2nd Class Chief Petty Officer.

He was discharged April 5, 1946.

Upon returning to Spokane, Wayne married Shirley Thomson, September 20, 1946.

He began his career joining the Spokane Police Department September 23, 1949 and rose through the ranks to Captain, then Assistant Chief in 1967; then Chief 1970 to 1980.

Wayne was the President of the NW Chapter of Police/Sheriff, President of the NW Chapter of the FBI Academy, Central Lions, a member of Prosperity Club; involved with United Way and was the Chief during Expo 74.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children Jerry (Sheryl) Hendren, Karla Gallaway and Marilee Walker; 11 grandchildren (two deceased); and nine great-grandchildren.

Donations may be made in his name to Hospice House of Spokane.

At his request, there will be no service.
