Lewis and Clark bounces back from shutout by turning back North Central

A week after being shut out, the Lewis and Clark football team rebounded with a much more consistent effort Friday.

The Tigers piled up 411 yards of total offense to turn back the North Central Indians 38-14 in a Greater Spokane League crossover game at Albi Stadium.

Backup quarterback Ian Smith and third-stringer Josh Via combined for three touchdowns, and Cameron Duncan led the ground assault with 109 yards on 18 carries.

Lewis and Clark finished with 230 yards rushing on 40 carries.

Twice the Tigers (2-3) answered when the Indians (1-4) pulled within 10 points.

The first time came when Camryn Schon returned the opening kick of the second half 87 yards to put LC ahead 24-7.

Jharen Pangelinan got an interception for NC, setting up the Indians at the LC 46-yard line. Ten plays later, Khanian Charlton plunged from a yard out to pull NC within 24-14 with 4:46 to go in the third quarter.

On the Tigers’ next possession, Ty Thompson caught the first of two 31-yard touchdown passes, extending LC’s lead to 31-14.

Schon appeared to score a TD on another return – this time a 50-yard punt return – but it was called back for an illegal hit with a helmet.

LC eventually scored, though, when Thompson caught the second 31-yard TD pass, this one from Via, with 1:24 to play.

In the first half, LC scored first when quarterback Ian Smith hit Adam Thompson on an 18-yard pass for a touchdown with 7 seconds to go in the first quarter.

Two possessions later, the Tigers doubled the lead to 14-0 when Schon, on LC’s first play at midfield, dashed untouched for a touchdown.

NC drove to LC’s 17-yard line but came away empty.

LC increased its lead to 17-0 with 32 seconds to go before halftime when Nick Davis chipped in a 23-yard field goal.

The Indians were finally awarded when, after Riley Smith found Layton Hahn on a 46-yard gain, they scored with less than a second to go before intermission. On a well-executed read-option fake, Smith got to the edge on a 1-yard TD run to pull NC within 17-7.

NC was held to 37 yards rushing on 33 carries before the Indians gained 29 on four attempts in the final 1:21.
