In brief: Canada routs Cuba in the Olympic basketball qualifying tournament

Olympics Nick Stauskas and Andrew Wiggins scored 15 points each in limited action and Canada routed Cuba 101-59 on Wednesday for its first victory in the Olympic basketball qualifying tournament at Mexico City.

The team fields nine NBA players and is considered one of the favorites to win one of the two berths to Rio.

Starter Kelly Olynyk (Gonzaga) of the Boston Celtics had six points and three rebounds and college teammate Robert Sacre of the Los Angeles Lakers had five points and three rebounds.

Florida names Harris starting quarterback

College football: Florida has named sophomore Treon Harris its starting quarterback for the Gators’ opener Saturday against New Mexico State.

Harris and redshirt freshman Will Grier have been vying for the starting job since spring practice began in March. Both are expected to play Saturday.

Strasburg scratched from Friday start

Baseball: Pitcher Stephen Strasburg won’t make his next scheduled start for the Washington Nationals on Friday.

Strasburg was limited to four innings by upper back tightness his last outing.

Memphis top pick Martin breaks foot

Miscellany: Memphis Grizzlies first-round draft pick Jarell Martin has a fractured left foot.

The forward from LSU injured his foot while colliding with another player during a workout. There is no timetable for his return.

Landa wins 11th stage: Mikel Landa of Spain raced ahead to climb the final ascent alone and win the 11th stage of the Spanish Vuelta in the Pyrenees, while Italy’s Fabio Aru finished second to claim the overall race leader’s jersey.

Lacrosse star ending 24-year career: Professional lacrosse’s all-time leading scorer John Tavares is retiring after 24 years in the National Lacrosse League with the Buffalo Bandits and moving on to coaching.

Devils defenseman retires: New Jersey Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador has retired after nearly 800 games in 14 NHL seasons.

Salvador was a captain for the Devils the past three seasons but missed all but 15 games last season with a back injury.

He finishes his career with 24 goals and 86 assists in 786 games split between the Devils and the St. Louis Blues.
