NWPrepsNow football roundup: Colfax rallies to beat Liberty

 Kenton Lyman returned an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to pad Colfax’s lead and the Bulldogs came from behind to beat Liberty 28-21 in a Northeast 2B League opener Friday night at Liberty.

Down 21-14 entering the fourth, Colfax’s Keith Gfeller scored on a 77-yard run and the ensuing 2-point conversion gave the Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0) a 22-21 lead. Gfeller, who also threw for a touchdown, finished with 93 yards on the ground.

Chase Burnham ran for 106 yards and two scores for Liberty (0-1, 0-1).

Colfax beat Liberty 33-6 in the season opener last year.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 46, Davenport 14: Jacob Saetre ran for 179 yards and four touchdowns and the Broncos (1-0, 1-0) routed the Gorillas (0-1, 0-1) in Ritzville. Saetre scored on a 68-yard run on the first play of the game. Davenport was led by Cruz Plasencia, who gained 107 yards on 11 carries and scored a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Reardan 27, Kettle Falls 0: Dustin Rettkowski ran for 112 yards on 12 carries and scored twice to power the Indians (1-0, 1-0) past the visiting Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1).

His 23-yard touchdown scamper in the first quarter gave Reardan a 6-0 lead and he scored from 13 yards out early in the fourth quarter to put the Indians on top 21-0.

The Indians limited Kettle Falls to 92 yards of offense, including just 17 yards on the ground.

Nonleague

University 43, Sandpoint 23: The Titans (1-0) scored 20 unanswered points in the second half and beat the host Bulldogs (1-1). University quarterback Logan O’Neil completed 10 of 19 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns and also scored on a 17-yard run in the third quarter. The Titans’ Treivon Tuggles racked up 206 rushing yards on 24 carries.

Cheney 28, Colville 0: Ty Graham ran for 136 yards on 16 carries and the Blackhawks (1-0) edged the visiting Indians (0-1). Graham scored once on the ground and also had a punt return for a touchdown. Brayden Butikofer added 55 rushing yards and a touchdown for Cheney.

Lewiston 56, North Central 13: Mason Ulrich scored two rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown to lead the Bengals (2-0) past the visiting Indians (0-1). Lewiston’s Riley Way scored on a 35-yard punt return.

Lakeside (WA) 46, Kellogg 0: Cameron Gay completed 14 of 24 passes for 216 yards and three scores as the Eagles (1-0) blanked the Wildcats (0-2) in Nine Mile Falls. Gay also had 52 yards and three scores on the ground.

Chase Kuhnart capped the scoring in the third quarter with a 60-yard touchdown gallop. He ran for 88 yards on eight carries.

Freeman 34, Timberlake 7: Jack Paukert scored two first-quarter touchdowns – a 68-yard punt return and a 1-yard plunge – and the Scotties (1-0) routed the visiting Tigers (1-1). Ben Darcy also scored twice for Freeman. He returned a fumble 10 yards and had a 94-yard kickoff return for a score in the second quarter. The Scotties racked up 299 rushing yards, while Timberlake managed just 62 yards on the ground.

East Valley 48, Deer Park 18: Knights quarterback Dante Clayton completed 17 of 20 passes for 257 yards and six touchdowns to guide East Valley (1-0) past the host Stags (0-1). Dean Lockwood scored all three of Deer Park’s touchdowns. He ran for 84 yards on 16 carries.

West Valley 45, Lakeland 22: Hunter Wright threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for a 30-yard score in the fourth to guide the Eagles (1-0) past the visiting Hawks (0-2). Lakeland scored all 22 of its points in the final quarter.

Pullman 60, East Valley (Yakima) 16: Mason Petrino completed 10 of 14 passes for 189 yards and four touchdowns to guide the Greyhounds (1-0) past the visiting Red Devils. Will Pitzer added four TDs for Pullman – three on the ground and one receiving. Pitzer finished with 71 rushing yards and 69 receiving yards.

Newport 20, Bonners Ferry 17: Johnny Quandt hauled in a 54-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and blocked the potential tying field goal with 1:30 left in the game to help the Grizzlies (1-0) edge the visiting Badgers (1-1). Quandt finished with three receptions for 70 yards. Bonners Ferry’s Nick Sabin ran for 168 yards on 34 carries.

Cusick 52, Yakama Tribal 6: Joe Cutshall scored three touchdowns and Tyson Shanholtzer scored twice as the Panthers (1-0) routed the visiting Eagles. Cusick put up 38 first-quarter points and led 52-0 at the half. Cutshall ran for 93 yards on four carries and scored twice on the ground. He also hooked up with quarterback Spirit White on a 22-yard touchdown connection. Shanholtzer gained 104 rushing yards on just five carries.

Selkirk 60, Columbia 20: The Rangers (1-0) racked up 319 rushing yards as a team and routed the host Lions (0-1). Selkirk’s Stephen Avey led the charge with 107 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns. He also returned an interception 20 yards for another score.

The Rangers put up 40 second-quarter points and led 54-0 at the half.

Liberty Christian 66, Almira/Coulee-Hartline 42: John Lesser racked up 394 rushing yards and four scores and threw for 156 yards and three more touchdowns to power the Patriots (1-0) past the host Warriors (0-1) in Coulee City. Almira/Coulee-Hartline’s Dallas Isaak accounted for five touchdowns. He threw for three and ran for two more.

White Star

Clark Fork 32, Kootenai 6: Wade Stevens threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more to guide the Wampus Cats (1-0, 1-0) past the host Warriors (0-1, 0-1) in Harrison.

Tyler Hammack hauled in both of Stevens’ touchdowns – both coming in the first half. Clark Fork’s Dakota West added a 73-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the second quarter.
