People: Bono applauds Europe’s move to accept refugees
U2 frontman Bono is applauding Europe’s turnabout in accepting refugees.
In an interview with Turin, Italy, daily La Stampa, Bono said the image of little Aylan on the beach – and pictures of German children offering their toys to Syrian refugees – “will remain in the history of Europe.”
He was quoted as saying: “We might truly be at a turning point for what Europe wants to be in the 21st century.”
He had particular praise for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, saying in a few short days she “has become a moral symbol for Europe.”
“This week, something incredible happened, and Europe isn’t the same as it was seven days ago.”
Bono was in Italy to kick off a European tour and participate in a U.N. event on ending world hunger.
Hamm, Westfeldt split after 18 years
Months after denying their relationship was over, Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt are splitting up.
Hamm and Westfeldt released a statement Monday through publicist Annett Wolf that “with great sadness” they were separating after 18 years. The couple, who never married, said they would “continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible.”
Earlier this year, the “Mad Men” actor completed treatment for alcohol addiction and praised Westfeldt, an actress and filmmaker, for her support, Wolf said at the time. In April, they disputed reports that they were breaking up.
Tyler Perry meets albino children
Tyler Perry recently met with a group of Tanzanian children with albinism who are living in a home the filmmaker helped fund.
Perry representative Keleigh Thomas Morgan said Monday he donated $200,000 three years ago to help build a four-bedroom house in New York for a group of children who had been mutilated for their body parts. The children attended Perry’s “Madea on the Run” play Thursday night at Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre, where they met him backstage.
The children will stay there while they receive medical treatment in the United States.
Perry donated after watching a special featuring Elissa Montanti, a Staten Island woman who runs the nonprofit Global Medical Relief Fund for children affected by war and natural disasters. Montanti recently brought the children with albinism to the U.S. from Tanzania.
