In brief: Police seize man, truck in connection with Arizona freeway shootings

From Wire Reports

PHOENIX – Police swarmed a convenience store near Interstate 10, detained a man and seized his white Chevrolet Tahoe on Friday, raising hopes of a resolution to the freeway shootings rattling Phoenix.

A man and woman were taken into custody for questioning, but Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said only the man was of interest to investigators.

The man was booked into a Phoenix jail on unrelated charges Friday night, DPS officials said. They didn’t release his name or the charges.

Phoenix drivers have been unnerved since the shootings began Aug. 29, mostly along Interstate 10, a major route through the city.

House vote on Iran won’t stop deal

WASHINGTON – The Republican-led House went on record Friday against the Iran nuclear deal, but the symbolic vote will not stop President Barack Obama from implementing the agreement.

After three hours of hot-tempered debate, the House voted 269 to 162 to reject the deal. Some two dozen Democrats broke with Obama to register their disapproval.

The fate of the agreement on Capitol Hill, however, was sealed on Thursday when Senate Democrats voted to uphold the accord with Iran, overcoming heavy GOP opposition to hand Obama a victory on his top foreign policy priority.

The Senate action guaranteed that any legislation disapproving of the accord will never reach Obama’s desk.

Clerk files appeal to block licenses

MOREHEAD, Ky. – A Kentucky county clerk who was recently jailed for denying same-sex couples marriage licenses has filed an appeal that would allow her to continue blocking the licenses.

Kim Davis filed the motion Friday with the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

Davis objects to gay marriage on religious grounds. She argued Friday that all the same-sex couples who sued her for a license received one from her deputies while she was in jail, so her office should not be required to issue them to any more couples once she returns to work.
