Volunteer opportunities

Junior Achievement of Washington – The organization is looking for volunteers to help with special events and in the office and classroom with kindergarten-fifth grade, sixth-eighth grade and ninth-twelfth grades. KYRS – Thin Air Community Radio – The station is looking for a volunteer music librarian (must spend at least five hours a week at the station), aspiring photographers and volunteers to record the concert calendar and report streaming music. The Lands Council – The council seeks volunteers for weekly tree care and maintenance. Volunteers will be watering trees, creating deer proof structures, and applying tree tubing or fencing. Lilac Bloomsday Association - Volunteers are needed for registration input, bag stuffing, number distribution, water aid, the finish line, T-shirt distribution, the Corporate Cup and course monitoring. Meals on Wheels Spokane - Volunteers are needed for Meals on Wheels Spokane to deliver hot, nutritious meals to seniors in need in the community. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday. Delivery time takes approximately one to two hours. To volunteer, call Heidi at (509) 456-0397.

Mission Community Outreach Center - Volunteers are needed to sort clothing and household good donations Monday mornings between 9 and noon, and Wednesday afternoons between 1-4 p.m. People are also needed to help with special events and to organize diaper and personal hygiene item drives. Volunteers must submit an application and be willing to submit to a Washington State Patrol background check. New Hope Resource Center - The New Hope Resource Center, 4211 E. Colbert Road in Colbert, is looking for a handyman to help the elderly with home repairs. Experience in carpentry, plumbing and electrical work would be helpful, but is not necessary. Volunteers are needed occasionally. Volunteers are also needed to help seniors and disabled individuals clean their homes and provide companionship. Volunteers may be asked to drive seniors and disabled individuals to doctor appointments and to the grocery store. Transportation may be needed once a month or once a week. Odyssey Youth Center - Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors and positive role models. Volunteers would provide supervision, help with meals and activities and assist staff and community educators. Greatest need is during drop-in hours. Shifts are approximately two to three hours long: 3:30- 6 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday; and 3:30-6 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. on Friday. Pawsitive Outreach Spay Neuter Alliance – The Newport-based shelter is in need of volunteers to help with emptying and refilling litter boxes and food and water dishes, general cleanup and fence repair. Rockwood South Hill – The continuing care community is looking for someone with a background in music and who is willing to work with seniors to volunteer two hours a week from Oct. 1-Dec. 25 as a holiday choir director. The volunteer would schedule at least five special performances for the choir, made up of Rockwood residents and team members, including venues at Rockwood South Hill, Rockwood at Hawthorne and Appleway Court. Salvation Army - The Salvation Army Food Bank needs help sorting and handing out food, along with helping clients’ shops and processing donations. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be able to lift up to 25 pounds, have good customer service skills and pass a criminal background check. Second Harvest Inland Northwest - Second Harvest is in need of volunteers to help sort and pack produce, food drive or bulk food items in preparation for delivery to the food bank’s emergency food outlets. Serve Spokane - Volunteers are needed for the Food Pantry, one of five of Serve Spokane’s community outreach programs. Duties may include filling bags with food, greeting visitors in the lobby, restocking shelves or pushing shopping carts out to the parking lot. The Sexual Assault and Family Trauma Center – The center is seeking people to become volunteer crisis response advocates. Volunteers provide medical and legal advocacy, emotional support, information and crisis intervention to victims of sexual assault and crime in Spokane with a 24/7 crisis line and response to four area hospitals. Volunteers are required to complete 40 hours of training, scheduled twice a year in October and March. A one-year time commitment (four evening or weekend shifts per month) is required. SNAP – Volunteers are needed with experience or skills in basic carpentry, mechanical work, grounds keeping, teaching or clerical experience to help staff with upkeep and projects, as needed. Soldiers’ Angels – The organization is looking for volunteers 16 and older to help with monthly morale luncheons and patient visits for veterans at the Spokane VA Health Care Center. For luncheons, usually held one Saturday a month, volunteers are needed to help set up, serve veterans, clean up and distribute donated items. The hours and days for patient visits vary. Spokane AIDS Network - Volunteers are needed to unload and pack grocery bags for approximately 65 local HIV positive residents. Delivery drivers are also needed to deliver the groceries to their homes. Grocery assistants must be able to lift and carry about 40 pounds and stand for up to two hours. Drivers will have to use their own car. A background check is required. Spokane COPS - Community volunteers are needed for assistance with crime prevention. Volunteers will receive professional training by crime-prevention agencies, police officers and officers with the Department of Corrections. Spokane Valley Partners - Three volunteer drivers are needed to transport food donations to the Spokane Valley Partners Food Bank warehouse. Shifts vary Monday through Friday from morning to afternoon. Truck access is preferable and a previous or current commercial driver’s license is encouraged. SpokAnimal CARE - Volunteers who are at least 15 years old are needed to help maintain a healthy and sanitary environment for SpokAnimal’s cats. Includes assisting in cleaning litter pans, disinfecting cages, feeding and taking time to hold, brush and play with the cats. Call (509) 534-8133 for more information.

St. Anne’s Children and Family Center - Kitchen and meal assistant volunteers are needed 3-5/week, from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., to serve breakfast, lunch and a snack each day at St. Anne’s. Volunteers will prepare meal carts for classrooms, and also deliver carts, clean up after meals and help prepare for the upcoming day. People interested in volunteering must be 18 years or older, able to lift 20-25 pounds, have a current Food Worker Card (cards can be obtained at www.srhd.org), pass a background check and be fingerprinted by the Department of Early Learning, and have a TB skin test. Volunteers are also needed to help with building and grounds maintenance, reception and hospitality and act as classroom assistants. St. Lawrence House - Volunteers, ages 18 and older, are needed to welcome and assist visitors of St. Lawrence House. Volunteers will provide hospitality, keep records of guests using shower and laundry services, and help with daily cleanup. Union Gospel Mission - Volunteers are needed for the men’s and the women’s and children’s facilities. Duties for the men’s facility include clothing room sorters, kitchen help, checking in residents, administration duties, pantry/donations managers, and building relationships through teaching classes, evangelism, tutors, etc. Duties for the women’s and children’s facility include updating and maintaining office paperwork, providing security for the facility, serving as worship leader or game leader and other general supervision duties. Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery - Certified houseparents are needed for at-risk children in the Spokane community. Shifts are from four to eight hours per week and include diapering, bathing and food preparation. Training will be provided; volunteers must meet state requirements. Victims’ Rights Response Team - Volunteers to become advocates for victims of sexual assault and other crimes. Community volunteers will provide medical and legal advocacy, crisis intervention and information referral to victims of sexual assault and other crimes. Comprehensive 35-hour training is provided and commitments of two evening or weekend shifts per month are required and stipends are available. For more information, call (509) 343-5005.

West Central Episcopal Mission – Volunteers, ages 18 and older, are needed to cook dinner for 80-100 people on the first and fourth Wednesday of each month. Basic cooking experience and a willingness to get a food handler’s permit are required. The mission also needs volunteers to act as table hosts on Wednesdays from 4:30-7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8-10:30 a.m. and wash dishes on Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. The mission’s St. Lawrence House is also looking for volunteers and artists to help visitors. Women’s and Children’s Free Restaurant - To offer nutritious meals three times a week to women and children in need, volunteers are needed to pick up food, serve, clean up the meals and wash dishes (Mondays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and Fridays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Must be 18 years or older, have a food handler’s card, and be able to lift and carry 25 lbs. Six-month commitment requested). Experienced prep cooks are needed Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. A food handler’s card is required. Volunteers are also needed to set up the dining area (three-hour shift), plate food (six-month commitment requested), act as dining room attendants (six-month commitment requested), electronically keep statistics and help with laundry (two-hour shift), special events (committee work, creating auction packages, marketing, etc.), fundraising, maintenance and repair, and security (three- to four-hour shift). Meals are also prepared and sent to Hope House, St. Margaret’s Shelter and Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery on a regular basis. Women’s Hearth - Volunteers are needed to interact with women in an open and accepting manner through one-on-one conversation and small or large group activities. They will need to be available to play games, do arts and crafts, assist staff and help with general cleanup activities. Training will be provided. World Relief - Volunteers are needed to act as refugee simulation station leaders. Leaders will help participants through various stations including a food station, a medical screening, a language station and a refugee screening interview. For the language station, speaking a second language besides English is required. The organization also needs volunteers to join the Gala Fall Dinner planning committee and to act as ESL/cultural mentors. YWCA of Spokane- The YWCA Women’s Opportunity Center seeks volunteers to help as job coaches, computer lab support, story collectors, a tech coach and a financial coach (all with a minimum of one- to four-hour shifts with a three-month commitment), a Jump Start program navigator (minimum of one-four hours a week for at least six months), wellness facilitators (minimum of one-two hours per month commitment) and professionals in the community. The center’s women’s boutique, Our Sister’s Closet, is also looking for a program assistant (minimum of two-and-a-half-hour shifts for a six-month commitment with a two-week trial period).
