Obituary: Sweeney, Clara “Pauline”

Age 98

SWEENEY, Clara “Pauline” (Age 97) Of Salina, KS passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2015.

She was born October 2, 1917, near Bennington, KS, to William Frederick and Anna Marie (Essig) Hogrefe.

Pauline graduated from Salina High School and Asbury Hospital School of Nursing in 1939.

She also attended Kansas State University in Manhattan and Colorado University.

During World War II Pauline served in the Army Nurse Corps with the 167th General Hospital in Europe.

She worked for many years with her husband Paul in the Salina Testing Lab.

She was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 1432, American Legion #0062, St. John’s Lutheran Church; past Noble Grand of Miriam Rebekah, Lodge #8, R.S.V.P., Saline Co. Association for Retarded Citizens, AARP.

For many years Pauline was active with her son Bill, supporting OCCK activities and Special Olympics sports.

Left to mourn her passing is her son, William “Bill” Sweeney, of the home; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Sweeney and Joshua Sweeney of Spokane, WA; daughter-in-law, Sherri Sweeney of Spokane, WA; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; son Richard; granddaughter, Sarah; brother William Hogrefe; and sisters, Florence Dixon and Marie Forcht.

A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Bennington Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, September 21, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary.
