Pirates-Panthers capsule

Pirates at Panthers
Kickoff: Saturday, 7 p.m. Chapman Stadium, Orange, Calif. Record: Whitworth (2-0), Chapman (0-1) Radio: 1230-AM Overview: The Pirates dominated La Verne last week, pillaging their way to a 39-0 halftime lead. But, Whitworth’s backup players didn’t perform with urgency and coach Rod Sandberg sent the starters back into the game. During his postgame speech, Sandberg paused for several seconds to let the sting of the 20-0 run by La Verne sink in for the players. Chapman was ranked until it got dismantled 52-14 by No. 4 Linfield on Sept. 12. But the Panthers have had two weeks to prepare for the uptempo Whitworth attack. The Pirates will be without receiver Anthony Fullman, who was lost to a broken collarbone, and receiver Chase Takaki, who also hurt a shoulder. Stepping in will be sophomores Kevin Thomas (Gonzaga Prep) and Michael McKeown. Last year, the Panthers beat Whitworth 49-34 at the Pine Bowl.
