In brief: Timberwolves shock Warriors 124-117 in overtime
NBA: The Golden State Warriors hit an unexpected obstacle on their quest for a record 73 wins, blowing a 17-point lead and losing 124-117 in overtime to the last-place Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night in Oakland, California.
Shabazz Muhammad scored a career-high 35 points and Andrew Wiggins had 32 as Minnesota prevented Golden State (69-9) from becoming the second team to win 70 games in a season. The Warriors now must win their final four games to break the single-season wins record of 72 set by Chicago in 1995-96.
Stephen Curry had a rare off-shooting night as Golden State took its third loss against a team currently in last place in its division, following earlier defeats at Milwaukee in December and last month at the Los Angeles Lakers.
But this one came at home, where the Warriors had won a record 54 straight regular-season games before falling to Boston last Friday.
Leonard lifts Spurs in final seconds: Kawhi Leonard made the go-ahead jumper with 4.9 seconds left and scored 18 points as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Utah Jazz 88-86 in Salt Lake City, giving Tim Duncan his 1,000th regular-season victory.
Rodney Hood missed the potential winning 3-pointer at the buzzer as Utah fell a half-game behind Dallas for seventh place in the Western Conference. The Jazz remained in the No. 8 slot and a half-game ahead of the Houston Rockets.
LaMarcus Aldridge and Manu Ginobili each added 14 points in the Spurs’ franchise-record 65th victory. They visit Golden State on Thursday.
Duncan became the third player with 1,000 victories in the regular season, following Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Robert Parish. Duncan is the career leader in victories with one team.
Hood finished with 23 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter.
Thunder routs Nuggets: Russell Westbrook had 13 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists to become the first player with 17 triple-doubles in a season in 27 years, and the Thunder routed the Nuggets 124-102 in Denver.
Westbrook has the highest total since Magic Johnson had 17 for the Los Angeles Lakers in 1988-89. Westbrook, who had seven in March while winning Western Conference player of the month honors, has 35 in his career, which is second behind LeBron James for most among active players.
Kevin Durant had 26 points and eight assists for Oklahoma City. The Thunder are locked into the No. 3 seed in the West with four games left.
Gary Harris led the Nuggets with 17 points and rookie Emmanuel Mudiay had 15. Denver has lost three in row and six straight to Oklahoma City.
Raptors top Hornets: DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points, Kyle Lowry had 12 of his 21 in the fourth quarter and the hoat Toronto Raptors beat Charlotte 96-90, handing the Hornets back-to-back losses for the first time in more than two months.
Jonas Valanciunas had 12 points and 12 rebounds and Corey Joseph added 11 points, including two key free throws in the closing seconds, as the Raptors won for the third time in four games.
Charlotte, which lost at Cleveland on Sunday, had not lost consecutive games since defeats at Utah and Portland on Jan. 27 and 29. They Hornets had won 22 of 29 since.
Jeremy Lin matched a season best with four 3-pointers and scored 21 points for Charlotte, while Marvin Williams had 15.
Landry leads Philadelphia: Carl Landry scored 22 points to lead Philadelphia to a 107-93 victory over the injury-depleted New Orleans Pelicans in Philadelphia, ensuring that the 76ers won’t tie their own league record for fewest victories in an 82-game season.
Philadelphia improved to 10-68 and now is one win clear of the 1972-73 76ers, who set an NBA mark for futility with a 9-73 mark. The 76ers have four games remaining.
Isaiah Canaan added 16 points for the 76ers, who snapped a 12-game losing streak while winning for just the second time in the last 27 contests.
Landry made his first nine shots before finishing 9 for 10 from the field, including tying a career high with two 3-pointers.
Dante Cunningham led the Pelicans with 19 points and Alexis Ajinca chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Grizzlies snap losing streak: Zach Randolph had 27 points and 10 rebounds, Vince Carter added 17 points and the Memphis Grizzlies snapped a six-game losing streak with a 108-92 victory over the Chicago Bulls in Memphis, Tennessee.
Memphis used a strong defense missing in recent games to turn back the Bulls, who had won three of four. Chicago never got the deficit under double digits in the fourth quarter of a loss that damaged its playoff hopes.
Hickey leads Islanders past Capitals in OT
NHL: Thomas Hickey scored in overtime as the New York Islanders rallied from two goals down in the third period to beat the host Washington Capitals 4-3 on Tuesday night to clinch a playoff berth.
Hickey returned to the game after being cut by a skate and beat Braden Holtby 2:13 into overtime to complete the comeback and secure the Islaznders’ third postseason appearance in four years.
Holtby allowed four goals on 27 shots and lost in his first attempt to tie Martin Brodeur’s single-season wins record.
John Tavares, Kyle Okposo and Anders Lee also scored for New York, which got a 29-save performance from Christopher Gibson in his first career NHL start.
Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 46th and 47th goals of the season, and T.J. Oshie also scored for Presidents’ Trophy-winning Washington, which has three games remaining for Holtby to attempt to tie or break Brodeur’s record.
Senators win seven straight: Sidney Crosby and Carl Hagelin each scored twice and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Ottawa Senators 5-3 in Ottawa, Ontario, for their seventh straight victory.
Crosby’s pair included an empty-netter and Patric Hornqvist also scored for Pittsburgh. Rookie goaltender Matt Murray made 27 saves.
Erik Karlsson, Mike Hoffman and Zack Smith scored for the Senators, who blew a 3-0 lead. Andrew Hammond stopped 23 of 27 shots.
Tied 3-3, the Senators failed to score on a 1:32 two-man advantage, and then Kris Letang sprawled across the crease to make a huge save behind Murray that looked like a sure goal. Then a harmless looking shot from Hagelin found its way past Hammond to make it 4-3 Pittsburgh.
Canes top Bruins in SO: Noah Hanifin scored the only goal of a shootout in the fifth round and Cam Ward stopped 35 shots to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat host Boston 2-1 and dent the Bruins’ playoff hopes.
Loui Eriksson’s third-period tying goal helped the Bruins force overtime and earn one point, giving them 91 for the season and moving them into a tie with the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers for the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot.
The Flyers have four games remaining and Detroit has three; Boston has two, including Thursday night against the Red Wings.
Jaccob Slavin scored for Carolina, which is already out of playoff contention.
Tuukka Rask stopped 27 shots for the Bruins.
Colorado eliminated from playoffs: Craig Smith scored at 4:17 of the third period, and the Nashville Predators eliminated Colorado from playoff contention by edging the Avalanche 4-3 in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Avalanche had to win out with Minnesota losing its final two to catch the Wild for the Western Conference’s second wild-card berth. The Wild lost 3-0 at home to San Jose, and the Avalanche rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 when Mattias scored off a rebound at 1:58 to tie it up again.
McDonagh sidelined: New York Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh is going to miss the final three games of the regular season and his status for the playoffs is uncertain because of an upper-body injury.
McDonagh was hit in the right hand by a shot in the first period of Monday’s night’s win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. He did not play in the final two periods.
Elias returns: New Jersey Devils left wing Patrik Elias returned against, seeing action for the first time since Dec. 19 following right knee surgery. Elias is New Jersey’s all-time leader in goals (407), assists (615) and points (1,022), having spent his entire 17-year career with the team.
This has been a lost season in what might be his final one with the Devils. Elias missed the first 20 games after hurting the knee. He played 13 games before undergoing surgery in January.
Wambach admits to trying drugs in past
Miscellany: Retired soccer star Abby Wambach admitted to once trying cocaine and smoking marijuana some 10 years ago, according to court documents connected to her arrest on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of intoxicants.
Wambach, who won a World Cup with the U.S. national team last summer, was arraigned in Multnomah County Circuit Court in Portland, Oregon. The documents said Wambach has no prior arrest record. In the documents, officers wrote that she first used marijuana at age 24 and her last use was at 25. It also states: “The defendant tried cocaine at age 25.”
She was arrested on Saturday night after running a red light in Portland, Oregon, where she lives, and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII) – alcohol.
Kerber opens with win: Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber opened defense of her Volvo Car Open title with a three-set victory over Lara Arruabarrena in Charleston, South Carolina. Kerber, the top seed and ranked No. 2 in the world, moved on and won her sixth straight match here with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3) win. It was also the second straight year Kerber upended Arruabarrena in Charleston, although the Spaniard put up more of a fight than in the 6-3, 6-0 defeat in 2015.
Zulu favorited for Blue Grass: Zulu is the 5-2 morning line favorite in a full field of 14 entered for Saturday’s $1 million Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, a final prep race for the Kentucky Derby. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Zulu drew the No. 4 post position and will be ridden by Javier Castellano. The 1 1/8 mile-race is worth a total of 170 Derby qualifying points, including 100 to the winner.
Zulu was second to Derby contender Mohaymen in the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream on Feb. 27 and has two wins in three starts.
