PAINE, Sandra (Storey)
(Age 64)
Sandra Lee (Storey) Paine, “Sandy” to her family and friends, died at home surrounded by family April 19, 2016 in Spokane, Washington.
She was born on December 2, 1951 in Lewiston, Idaho to Gerald Storey and Catherine McGregor Storey.
She grew up in Lewiston and attended grade school there.
Her childhood summers were spent at her parents’ cabin on Kid Island Bay on Coeur d’ Alene lake in Idaho.
As a result, she acquired a lifelong love of swimming, waterskiing, and canoeing.
Sandy attended and graduated from St. Helens Hall (Oregon Episcopal School) in Portland, Oregon during her high school years.
She loved the many extracurricular activities offered to the students at St. Helens.
Fencing, equestrian dressage, and downhill skiing were some of her favorites.
Sandy graduated with a B.A.
degree in Sociology from Whitworth College in 1974.
She spent her sophomore academic year studying in Salzburg, Austria.
On June 21, 1980 Sandy was married to her husband, Thomas R. Paine at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Spokane.
She gave birth to their son, Robert in 1982.
Her greatest joy in life was being Robert’s mother, watching him grow and mature and supporting him in school activities and talents as an artist.
Over the years she also enjoyed supporting her husband in his career at Avista Corporation.
Sandy had a huge place in her heart for animals and while living in Spokane raised Shetland Sheep dogs (Shelties) as pets for over 25 years and adopted her much loved cats from the Humane Society.
In her spare time Sandy was an avid reader and loved to curl up with a good book and a cup of hot tea, especially on a cold winter day.
She enjoyed collecting contemporary art from regional artists and her home reflected this passion.
Sandy had many long-lasting friendships over the years and treated each of these friends with love, kindness, and true caring.
If she hadn’t heard from someone in a while, she’d pick up the phone to see how they were doing and make plans to get together.
In addition to being a managing partner of her family farming and real estate interests in Idaho and Washington, Sandy was a strong believer in community service and served on a number of boards including the League of Woman Voters, Shalom Ministries Dining with Dignity, Women of Water Power, City View Pool and Country Club, and the Altar Society and Finance Committee of St. Andrews Church.
She was a member of The Spokane Historical Society, the Humane Society, the ASPCA, PEO Chapter CL, the Spokane Club and the Columbia Tower Club in Seattle.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, her son Robert, her sisters Susan Lynn Storey of Lewiston and Robin McGregor Storey of Boise.
At her request, there will only be a private family memorial.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Humane Society.
