Boys basketball: GSL game of the week features Ferris at Shadle Park

GSL GAME OF THE NIGHT

Ferris (2-1, 1-1) at Shadle Park (3-1, 1-1): Both teams are expected to finish at least in the top half of the league, and the Highlanders have higher aspirations than that.

Shadle is coming off a 53-38 loss to Gonzaga Prep, where 6-foot-8 all-league post Tanner Groves, who has signed at Eastern Washington, made one basket and scored three points.

Ferris, on the other hand, had little trouble dispatching Mead, 68-38, led by Reece Van Lierop’s 19 points. The Saxons dominated the paint against Mead, outrebounding the Panthers 40-25.

Other notable matchups

Freeman (3-0) at Newport (2-1): Freeman was considered the favorite in Northeast A and is off to a running start, knocking off three Great Northern League teams to open the season, the most recent – over Cheney 60-38 – in impressive fashion.

Newport ranked third in preseason polling in NEA. The Grizzlies most impressive win thus far was over St. George’s, considered a favorite in Northeast 2B.

Northwest Christian (1-0, 1-0) at St. George’s (2-1, 1-0): This a battle for early-season supremacy in Northeast 2B.

NWC returns two all-league first-team selections in point guard Ryan Ricks and 6-7 forward Asher Cox, who scored 31 points in the Crusaders’ opener against Springdale.

St. George’s is led by Erik Farias, who had 17 points last week in a blowout win over Kettle Falls.
