Area roundup: Ben College scores 28 in Whitworth rout of Covenant

Ben College was 6 of 8 on 3-point attempts and scored 28 points to help Whitworth rout visiting Covenant 93-62 on Friday.

College was 8 of 10 overall and made all six free throw attempts to pace the Pirates (5-1), who shot 60 percent overall and hit on 9 of 16 (56 percent) 3-point attempts.

Christian Jurlina scored 20 points with nine rebounds. Jurlina was 8 of 12 from the field and 3 of 4 from the line. Kyle Roach and Drew Sears added 13 points apiece for Whitworth. Kenny Love had nine assists with seven points.

Covneant was led by Connoer Sears with 12 points. Berto Dryden and Z Arima added 10 points apiece.

North Idaho 67, Yuba 63: The Cardinals advanced at the San Jose City College Classic in San Jose, California, knocking off Yuba.

North Idaho faces the Fresno City-Alameda winner (late) in the championship game on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Tacoma 94, CC Spokane 84: Kahliel Wyatt scored 27 points with 10 rebounds and the Titans topped the Sasquatch in the Dale J. Bates Invitational in Eugene.

Spokane was led by Levi Taylor with 26 points, and Cesar Sandoval added 20.

CCS plays New Hope in the consolation bracket on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Mikayla Ferenz scored a season-high 34 points, including crucial free throws late, and Idaho (3-5) edged Wyoming (6-3) 74-71 in Laramie, Wyoming.

A layup by Wyoming’s Hailey Ligocki with 25 seconds left trimmed the Vandals’ lead to three. After a timeout, Mikayla Ferenz made a pair from the line with 21 seconds left. Wyoming had two chances to tie with 3-point attempts in the final 10 seconds but missed both.

Taylor Pierce had 14 points for Idaho, and Geraldine McCorkell added 12. Brooke Reilly grabbed nine rebounds.

Wyoming was led by Liv Roberts with 19 points and Ligocki finished with 17.

Whitworth 65, Colorado College 52: Madison Moffat scored 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and the Pirates knocked off the Tigers in the Kim Evanger Raney Classic in Walla Walla.

Whitworth takes on Louisiana College on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the second day of the round-robin tournament.

The Pirates snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 2-5. The Tigers dropped to 1-6.

Whitworth took a 26-20 lead into the half and added a 15-point third quarter to wrest control. Erika Kuehn had six points during the stretch, and Moffat finished her season-high performance with a six-point fourth quarter.

Keuhn finished with 13 points while Grace Douglas and Callie Harwood added 10 apiece.

Casey Torbet led Colorado College with 17 points and six rebounds.

College Volleyball

Courtney Schwann, Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones all had 11 kills apiece and No. 8 Washington swept its round of 16 match against Arizona (25-15, 25-22, 25-18) in the NCAA Regionals in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Washington (29-4) moved into the Elite Eight for the 10th time in program history, and the third time in the past four seasons, beating the Wildcats (20-15) for the third time this season.

The Huskies will face No. 1-seeded Nebraska on the Huskers’ home court in the Elite 8 on Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be the third-straight NCAA tournament meeting between Washington and Nebraska, the fourth in the past five years, and the seventh time in the past 12 years, dating back to Washington’s 2005 NCAA finals win. Nebraska knocked out the Huskies each of the past two years.

Jones added a team-leading 10 digs for a double-double and had six block assists. Scambray also had nine digs and four blocks, and Schwan had seven digs and three blocks. Freshman Kara Bajema was in on eight blocks, and had six kills. Setter Bailey Tanner had 34 assists, an ace, and three blocks.

College Wrestling

North Idaho 30, Eastern Oregon 12: The Cardinals won the last three matches of the meet and topped visiting Eastern Oregon.

Alex Aguilar (174) won a decision, while Levi Perry and Jeremy Merryweather both won by pin.

Rodeo

Shane Proctor was bucked by SweetPro’s Long John, second in 2016 Bull of the Year voting, in the ninth round of the National Fnials Rodeo but hung on to first in average and third in world rankings at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

Riley and Brady Minor were sixth in team roping and hold fourth in average and fourth in the rankings.

In tie-down roping, Tyson Durfey didn’t place. He’s third in average at NFR and eighth in rankings.

Pamela Capped didn’t place in barrel racing and is sixth in average and 11th in world rankings.

Junior hockey

Carter Jones tied it in the third period and scored the winner in overtime to lift the Spokane Braves over the Golden Rockets 2-1 in KIJHL action at the Ice-A-Rena.
