WCC roundup: Pacific pulls upset at BYU
Alec Kobre scored 17 points and T.J. Wallace added 15, including a go-ahead 3-pointer, to lead Pacific to a 77-72 upset of BYU on Saturday in Provo, Utah, snapping the Cougars’ 17-game home winning streak.
Wallace hit a straightaway 3-pointer for a 62-60 lead with 3:30 left. That was the final basket for Pacific (7-15, 5-7) but the Tigers made 15 of 16 free throws with D.J. Ursery sinking four in the final seven seconds. The Tigers finished 25 of 29 from the line.
BYU (17-8, 8-4), which had been 11-0 at home this season, didn’t have a field goal in the final 2:42 but Chase Fischer made 10 straight free throws to keep the Cougars close.
Fischer finished 14 of 14 at the line for 23 points. Kyle Davis was 8 of 11 for 21 points and Nick Emery had 13. BYU shot just 34 percent and 5 of 23 from the arc.
Saint Mary’s 60, San Diego 43: Calvin Hermanson scored nine of his 12 points in the first half as the Gaels built a double-digit lead early and cruised to a road victory over the Toreros.
Joe Rahon had 13 points to lead the Gaels (19-3, 10-2), who bounced back from a 70-59 loss at BYU on Thursday, and have won five of their last six games. Dane Pineau added 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Jito Kok scored 11 points for San Diego (8-15, 3-9). The Toreros shot just 35 percent on 19-of-54 shooting, missed all 11 3-point attempts and scored a season-low 43 points.
San Diego missed 11 of its first 13 shots as the Gaels jumped out on a 15-4 run and built a 31-19 halftime lead.
Saint Mary’s outrebounded San Diego 46-30.
Portland 92, Loyola Marymount 78: Alec Wintering scored 29 points, D’Marques Tyson 23 – the pair combining for 11 3-pointers – and the Pilots took control in the second half to defeat the Lions in Los Angeles.
Jarrel Marshall added 13 points and Bryce Pressley 11 for the Pilots (11-15, 5-8), who went 15 of 31 from 3-point range and shot 53 percent.
Portland had seven 3s, shot 50 percent and Wintering and Tyson combined for 24 points in the first half, which ended tied at 46.
Wintering, Tyson and Marshall hit consecutive 3s as the Pilots stretched a five-point lead to 14 with 12:45 to play and the lead stayed in double figures.
Portland shot 57 percent in the second half. Wintering had seven rebounds and seven assists, Tyson eight rebounds and Marshall eight rebounds and five assists.
Adom Jacko had 35 points, his sixth-straight game with at least 20 for the Lions (10-13, 3-10), who have lost four straight.
San Francisco 89, Santa Clara 86 (OT): Devin Watson scored 24 points, including six in overtime, Uche Ofoegbu blocked a potential game-tying 3-pointer, and the Dons edged the visiting Broncos.
Jared Brownridge’s jumper pulled Santa Clara within 87-86 with 10 seconds left in overtime before he fouled out, and Watson made both free throws for an 89-86 lead.
Matt Hauser missed one of two free throws, then appeared to intentionally miss the second in hopes of setting up a final shot. KJ Feagin got the ball off the offensive rebound, but Ofoegbu blocked his 3-point attempt and time expired.
Tim Derksen scored 21 points and Ofoegbu had 12 with 11 rebounds for the Dons (13-10, 6-6), who led by 12 at halftime.
Feagin scored 23 points with a career-high four 3-pointers for the Broncos (8-16, 4-8). Brownridge had 18 and Matt Hubbard had a career-high 16. Brendyn Taylor tied it at 78 with a layup at the end of regulation.
