Obituary: Wright, William “Coach”

Born in Armagh, Ireland in 1939 Bill came to Spokane with his parents in 1949.

He attended West Valley High School where he excelled in several sports and earned an Eagle Scout badge as well.

Bill continued his education at Eastern Washington University where he earned a teaching degree.

He would spend the next thirty plus years teaching history and coaching at East Valley High School.

Bill was an avid mountaineer who loved the outdoors and gave generously to the Sierra Club.


Blessed as an athlete, Bill excelled in many sports, particularly tennis.

In 1971 He won the men’s singles championship at the Spokane Racquet Club.
Bill was loved and respected by all those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

He leaves behind a lifetime of colorful memories created in classrooms and on soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts Most of his days were spent on the golf course at Downriver and walking his beloved dogs through Manito Park.

Bill loved to talk and enjoyed the times he shared with his friends at Chan’s, where he was legend.


Bill will be greatly missed by Tom and Joanie Aris and their sons Chris and Ron of Seattle, Pat and Kevin Soderquist and a long, long list of friends from Spokane.
There will be a memorial service held in early Spring.
