Obituary: Hempstead, Richard And Alice
Alice Marilyn (Hagen) Hempstead
8/11/1924 ~ 3/24/2015
Dick and Alice were both born and raised in Rochester, Minnesota.
They attended Rochester High School where Dick was an athlete in several sports: football, basketball, track and ski jumping.
Dick went on to Dartmouth Medical School for two years and then finished his medical degree at the University of Michigan.
After high school Alice attended the Minneapolis School of Art, with a brief time in California working as a telephone operator.
Dick and Alice married on June 16th, 1951 and moved to Spokane where Dick began his medical practice at the Rockwood Clinic, a career that lasted for over 30 years.
Alice kept busy as a homemaker, raising their five children.
They loved hiking, sailing, skiing, camping, and vacations on the Oregon Coast.
Dick enjoyed working with his hands, building a log cabin after he retired.
Alice was an exceptional artist and potter.
They both had a quick wit and a great sense of humor and family gatherings were usually filled with lots of laughter.
Summers were spent on the sailboat at Lake Coeur d’Alene and at Elkins’ Resort on Priest Lake and winters were spent on the local ski hills, since Dick taught all the kids to ski when they were about five years old.
Dick and Alice were preceded in death by their daughter Sarah.
They are survived by their four remaining children: Martha (Garry Kenney), Eric, Bill, and Karen (Steve Smith), six grandchildren: Barrett (Christina) Kenney, Mira (Jeff) Lund, Leah (Robb) Kenney, Tim (Melissa) Kenney, Ameena Aamer, Hadega Aamer, and two great- granddaughters: Isabel Lund and Haya Aamer.
They were deeply loved and
will be greatly missed by all who knew them.
