Lillian A.

Lillian Antoinette Buscaglia Sweeny was born in Fresno, CA on September 12, 1920 and passed away peacefully on February 20th, 2016 surrounded by loving and devoted family members.

She was the daughter of Henrietta and Peter Buscaglia and spent childhood with her five siblings in Merced, CA.

Lillian graduated from St. Francis Nursing School in San Francisco where she met the love and light of her life, Jerome Sweeny, MD.

Jerome and Lillian spent the early years of marriage in San Francisco then moved to Spokane in 1951 where they raised their nine children and established a rich family, social and professional life.

Many happy days were spent at the beloved family home on Priest Lake in Idaho.

It was a beautiful setting for summer days with children, relatives and friends, laughter and stories being shared.

Lillian was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and community member.


She is survived by eight of her nine children; Sharron Quigley (Glenn - Deceased), Mary Saad (Paul), Joanne (Les Benoy), Dennis (Debbie - Deceased), Kevin (Donna), Patrice (Mike Carper), Margaret Malloy (Bill) and Suzanne.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome; her oldest son, Jerome Jr; her grandson, Brian; her parents; and her siblings.

Lillian was a loving, interested presence in the lives of her 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and will be remembered fondly as MaMere.


Creating and maintaining a secure and supportive home was Lillian’s strongest focus and most valued accomplishment.

She gave selflessly to others and modeled the ideals of strength, loyalty, compassion and discipline.

Lillian was a beautiful lady, classic and elegant with a zest for life and a ready smile.

Lillian spent her later years enjoying well-deserved relaxation and creating memories with family and friends.

She treasured all her loved ones’ accomplishments and felt such pride in all that her children achieved.


Burial will be a private family service.

Lillian will be buried next to all of her family at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in the Spokane Valley.
