Spokane Chiefs lose to Winterhawks for second time in two nights

PORTLAND – Dominic Turgeon scored two goals and Portland beat Spokane 5-1 in a Western Hockey League game on Sunday night, the Chiefs’ second loss to the Winterhawks in two nights.

Turgeon scored one goal on the power play and another shorthanded. The goals were his 18th and 19th of the season.

His shorthanded goal came on a breakaway and gave Portland its final goal with just under 10 minutes left in the game.

Turgeon tapped in the puck from inside the crease to make it 4-1 in the second period as Portland scored its third power-play goal of the night.

Portland’s Alex Schoenborn put in a rebound on a power play with 3:30 remaining in the opening period to lead 3-1.

Skyler McKenzie broke a 1-1 tie with 10:52 left in the first period.

McKenzie’s goal came just 39 seconds after Ryan Hughes sped past the Chiefs defense and sent the puck past goalie Tyson Verhelst on a power play.

Dominic Zwerger scored his 15th goal of the season and gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a power play, taking a feed from Matt Sozanski before sending the puck past goalie Adin Hill. Jason Fram also got an assist on the play.

The teams tied with 31 shots each. The Winterhawks were 3 of 5 on the power play while the Chiefs were just 1 of 5.

The Chiefs’ Kailer Yamamoto saw his point-scoring streak end at eight games.

Portland has defeated the Chiefs four out of five meetings this season.

Sunday’s loss, coming a night after a 6-5 shootout defeat at the Moda Center, left the Chiefs at 19-15-3-2 and 43 points in the U.S. Division, tied for second with Seattle and three back of Everett. Portland is 20-17-1-9 and two points behind the Chiefs in fourth place.

The Chiefs, who ended their road trip 1-2-1, next open a four-game homestand game on Saturday night at 7:05 against the Regina Pats.
