Pedestrian killed in crash with suspected drunken driver
A suspected drunken driver is accused of causing a crash that killed a pedestrian Thursday night in Spokane Valley.
Court documents say Spokane County Sheriff’s Offiice deputies arrested Meegan M. Vanderburgh, 43, on suspicion of vehicular assault after she allegedly rear-ended a truck at the intersection of East Sprague Avenue and South Farr Road, causing that truck to hit a woman who was crossing the street. The charge will be upgraded to vehicular homicide, a prosecutor on the case said Friday.
The truck’s driver told investigators the victim, Cheryl Camyn, was crossing Sprague Avenue against the traffic light with another person, court documents say. He stopped, but Vanderburgh hit him from behind, pushing him into Camyn. Another witness to the crash said Camyn went under the truck, court documents say.
A deputy conducted a breathalyzer test and found Vanderburgh had a blood-alcohol level of 0.131 percent shortly after the crash, court documents say.
Camyn, 52, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died Friday, the Spokane County medical examiner’s office said.
In a court appearance Friday, Vanderburgh’s bond was set at $20,000, less than the $100,000 requested by prosecutors.
