Plea deal for Kyle Odom to be explored in Pastor Remington shooting

From staff reports

Prosecutors and defense lawyers for Kyle Odom, the man accused of shooting a Coeur d’Alene church pastor in March, will meet with a senior district judge to discuss a possible plea agreement in the case.

Any plea deal that emerges from the confidential mediation would be presented in open court to the judge in the case, who could accept or reject the agreement. If the sides don’t reach a plea agreement, Odom’s prosecution would resume.

Odom is charged with aggravated battery for the March 6 shooting outside the Altar Church. Pastor Tim Remington was shot six times and survived.

Odom originally was charged with attempted murder, which carries the same maximum penalty – 15 years in prison – as aggravated battery. Kootenai County prosecutors also charged Odom with using a deadly weapon in committing the felony, which could give him another 15 years behind bars if convicted.

He is in the Kootenai County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

Odom’s defense attorneys have asked the court for extensions in the case so they can evaluate his competency to proceed. Odom has a history of mental illness, and he mailed letters and electronic documents to his parents and media outlets saying he plotted to kill Remington because he believed the pastor was part of a vast alien conspiracy to enslave the human race.
