Oregon woman accused of helping roommate commit fiery suicide
PORTLAND – A 75-year-old woman whose roommate died in a fiery suicide has been indicted on a charge she provided help.
The authorities say Edna Bennett of Newberg supplied the victim, Ana Frigine-York, with the gasoline she used to light herself on fire June 1.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Bennett told the arresting officer she knew her roommate of eight years would use the gasoline if she needed to escape the demons tormenting her.
Bennett said she followed the roommate’s request to remove personal belongings, leave the mobile home and later distribute a letter to police.
Court records show Bennett faces charges or arson, manslaughter and conspiracy.
Bennett, who owned the mobile home, was released on bail and is scheduled to enter a plea Aug. 25.
She has been ordered to continue mental health treatment and avoid contact with the roommate’s family.
