Terrain awarded $100,000 grant

The Spokane arts collective Terrain has been awarded $100,000 grant from the Seattle-based organization Washington Women’s Foundation. The foundation presented Terrain co-founder Ginger Ewing with the grant at a gala event in Seattle on Thursday.

Terrain is the first Spokane organization to receive a grant from WWF, and the organizers say the money will go toward hiring its first paid employee.

“This an incredibly prestigious award to win,” Terrain’s organizers wrote in an email announcement to supporters, “and almost unthinkable for a nonprofit our size, a scrappy team of volunteers without huge financial backing and without paid staff.”

Established in 1995, the Washington Women’s Foundation pools funds from its 475 members and awards grants to nonprofit organizations serving art, education and health issues. This year’s other grant recipients include Team Read, Washington Water Trust, Encompass and Coastal Harvest.

Terrain’s next event, the art marketplace Bazaar, will be held in downtown Spokane on June 18.
