Part of Huntington Park closed due to groundwater

Workers examine water flowing over steps at Huntington Park in downtown Spokane. The lower part of the stairs were closed until further notice because of recent groundwater surfacing in the park, which is owned by Avista Corp. The lower section of Huntington Park was closed Monday as Avista Corp. began investigating an increase in the amount of groundwater surfacing within the public areas of the park.

The lower part of the public staircase has been closed, and shallow water is running along the paved path and stairs. Most of the park, which provides a popular overlook for the Spokane River in downtown, remains open. Work will continue until the source of the water has been found and a solution has been put in place, Avista officials said.
