Newsmakers: Anaheim Ducks’ Nate Thompson out several months with torn Achilles

Sidelined Anaheim Ducks center Nate Thompson will be sidelined for several months after tearing his Achilles tendon during an offseason workout. He is not expected back in uniform before the NHL trade deadline, which typically falls around March 1.

Added UNLV has gained some frontcourt depth with the addition of St. John’s transfer Christian Jones to its basketball team. Jones is a graduate transfer and will be eligible to play immediately. A 6-foot-7 forward, Jones played three seasons at St. John’s.

Injured Dallas running back Darren McFadden fractured his right elbow in an accident at home and will likely be sidelined at the start of training camp. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the accident happened during Memorial Day weekend. McFadden, who had surgery Tuesday, was fourth in the NFL in rushing last season with 1,089 yards.

No vote A Baylor spokeswoman says the school’s governing board did not take a vote on the future of former football coach Art Briles amid reports some prominent donors wanted to bring him back. Briles was suspended “with intent to terminate” when Baylor officials released a 13-page summary of an investigation into how the school mishandled sexual assault allegations, including several against football players.

Sued Heavyweight boxer Deontay Wilder and promoter DiBella Entertainment have filed a $5 million lawsuit against Russian Alexander Povetkin and his promoter alleging breach of contract. Wilder, the WBC champion, and mandatory challenger Povetkin were scheduled to fight May 21 in Moscow but the fight was postponed indefinitely when the Russian tested positive for meldonium.

Signed The Denver Broncos signed linebacker Brandon Marshall to a four-year, $32 million extension. He has posted back-to-back 100-tackle seasons.
