Sanders is Jewish enough
Charles Krauthammer has decided that Sen. Bernie Sanders is not Jewish enough (“Jews are more than the Holocaust,” March 13). He laments that Sen. Sanders “reduces” Jewish identity to the “victimhood” of the Holocaust, and overlooks the 3,000-year history of Jews and Judaism.
Surprisingly, Krauthammer forgets that the history of the Jewish Diaspora is one long record of discrimination, oppression and cruel pogroms experienced by Jews wherever they lived, despite their great contributions in the arts, sciences and culture of all nations.
Then, unprecedented in brutality and violence, the Holocaust took place before our eyes, in the middle of 20th century, in the heart of Europe, in the center of Western civilization, culminating in the most cruel genocide of 6 million innocent Jews. For all Jews and Judaism, the Holocaust became a central and holy occurrence, and the jewel in the crown of Jewish history.
Yes, Krauthammer. The Holocaust is not just a “memory.”
Sen. Sanders is a great American who fights for us unwaveringly. He deeply appreciates the profundity of the Holocaust and deeply regards his fellow man. He is a bright light in the darkness and Jewish enough for me.
