New 520 bridge on display before it opens to traffic

Associated Press

SEATTLE – Cyclists and pedestrians will have a chance to explore the new State Route 520 floating this weekend before the structure opens to vehicle traffic.

The new six-lane bridge over Lake Washington replaces the four-lane version built in 1963. It’s designed to be stronger and safer.

A grand opening celebration starts Saturday with a 10K run. Both the old and new 520 bridge will be closed over the weekend for events.

Transportation spokesman Steve Peer says the new bridge will open to westbound vehicle traffic on April 11. Eastbound lanes on the new bridge will open April 25, when the state plans to permanently close the old bridge.

The new bridge includes a 14-foot wide path for bicyclists and pedestrians and a transit/HOV lane in each direction.
