Idaho state tournaments: Lake City captures 5A State baseball title
Tanner Griswell finished 3 for 3 and drove in three runs Saturday as Lake City won its first 5A State baseball title since 2007 with a 4-1 victory over Meridian at Boise Hawks Memorial Stadium.
Kody Kolden pitched a complete-game eight-hitter for the Timberwolves, who outscored rivals 15-3 during the three-day event.
Lake City finished 20-8 while the Trojans ended the season 17-14.
Lake City’s Inland Empire League rival Lewiston (24-6) took third place with a 6-2 win over Highland (20-13).
3A State
Bonners Ferry 7, Weiser 0: Vince Bennett pitched a complete-game two-hitter and finished 2 for 3 with a double and RBI as the Badgers (24-3) defeated the Wolverines (17-11) at Fruitland High to take third place.
Bennett won two games at state, striking out eight and walking two in the final victory.
2A State
Bear Lake 8, St. Maries 4: The Bears defeated the Lumberjacks in the game for third place at Orofino High School.
Softball
Rain continued to plague the 5A State tournament at Bonneville High School in Idaho Falls, prompting officials to receive permission to attempt to play Sunday and move the tournament in Boise.
Eagle (27-0) and Coeur d’Alene (24-1) are scheduled to complete their semifinal starting at 8 a.m. The teams were scoreless after four innings on Friday. Rocky Mountain (20-6) and Boise (18-9) are in the other semifinal.
The title game and third-place game are set for 10 a.m.
Lake City’s consolation game, against the CdA-Eagle loser, was canceled. The Timberwolves finished 20-7.
Sandpoint finished the season 13-8 after a 7-6 loss to Twin Falls at the 4A State tournament at Twin Falls High School.
The tournament, originally scheduled as double-elimination, was switched to single-elimination after rain postponed Friday’s games.
