Failing the homeless

On Friday morning a friend and I went for an early morning walk on the Centennial Trail. As we headed back into town, I spotted and elderly woman emerging from her sleeping nest amongst the bushes, behind the monument dedicated to the Sisters of Sacred Heart Hospital. What took me aback was her gender; we have homeless men sleeping in our alley which, while disturbing, has sadly become common place.

Seeing this homeless woman brought home to me how we, as a community, are failing to address this serious issue. Thank you, Francie Armstrong, for your letter (Aug. 27). It is, indeed, time we start talking about homelessness.
