National parks and Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area were heavy hitters for Washington’s tourism economy last year, attracting more than 8.5 million visitors who spent $562 million during their stays.

“The national parks of Washington state attract visitors from across the country and around the world,” said Laura Joss, regional director for National Park Service’s Pacific West Region. “Whether they are out for an afternoon, a school field trip, or a month-long family vacation, visitors come to have a great experience, and end up spending a little money along the way.”

Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area on the Columbia River attracted 1.3 million visitors last year, who spent about $54.3 million during their visits. The spending supported about 754 jobs, according to Park Service.

Washington has 15 national parks and recreation areas, including Olympic National Park and Mount Rainier National Park.

Lodging and sales of food and beverages account for about half of visitor spending, followed by gas, admissions and fees and souvenirs.
