Compost fair offers fun, way to reduce waste

From Staff Reports

A Compost Fair and Arbor Day Celebration will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Finch Arboretum.

The event is held annually to promote composting as a way to reduce solid waste generated in the community.

While Arbor Day was on Friday, the compost fair is held on the weekend.

Members of the Spokane County Master Composters/Recyclers group will give how-to demonstrations. They will also show off the heat generated by actively decomposing compost.

Yard waste can be turned into a mulch for planting beds and can be an abundant source of free fertilizer and soil conditioner.

Residents being served by the county’s Regional Solid Waste System can take home a free compost bin. Proof of residence is needed.

The arboretum is at 3404 W. Woodland Blvd. just south of Sunset Boulevard.
