Due to a communication error, Spokane’s Browne’s Addition will not be plowed today

Due to a communication error by the city of Spokane, Browne’s Addition will not be plowed today.

According to signage posted on the streets and tweets sent out by the city’s Twitter account, the area was due for a plow on it’s east and west streets Wednesday, and north and south streets on Thursday.

Residents were asked to move their cars to make way for the plows on the narrow roads, which cannot fit if cars aren’t moved. In the past, unmoved cars have been towed at the owner’s expense.

But when a news release was posted Monday morning to the city’s website, it wrongly stated that north and south streets would be plowed first. Tweets also were sent out that echoed the error hours before more tweets were sent stating east and west.

Concerned that residents were confused, city officials canceled the plow since many cars likely are parked in the wrong locations as a result of the miscommunication.

“It’s a practical matter,” said city spokesman Brian Coddington. “When we don’t give people the proper notice, and we provide conflicting information, it’s not fair to expect people to move their vehicles in a timely manner.”

However, Coddington said the original signage and tweets were both wrong from the get-go. According to him, the city had originally intended to plow north and south streets first, then hit east and west roads on Thursday.

A new schedule, which was posted to the city’s website early Wednesday morning, has north and south streets scheduled to be plowed Thursday at 9 a.m., and east and west streets Friday at 9 a.m.

The city asks residents to move their cars on affected streets before plowing begins.
