100 years ago in Spokane: Redheads offered free admission to musical comedy
From our archive, 100 years ago
The Pantages Theater in Spokane offered free admission to the musical comedy “Sunset Blondes” for every woman and girl in town who possessed “gingerbread” or “Titian locks.”
That meant: red hair.
The manager said he was himself of the redhead family and he wanted all woman and girls “of the great family of the brick-tops” to enjoy the show.
The musical comedy featured eight “girl” redheads. “Sunset Blondes” was itself a slang term for redheads.
From the power beat: The Washington Water Power Co. signed a contract to deliver power from the Long Lake Dam to the Intermountain Power Company of Butte.
The dam was completed 18 months earlier, but for a variety of reasons, WWP had yet to produce any power there. Two out of the four generators were installed, but when the company tried to use one three weeks before, it promptly burned out.
With this new contract, all four generators were being readied for use. WWP did not say how the Intermountain Power Company was planning to use the power, but there was some speculation that it would be used to electrify the Milwaukee Road line west of Avery, Idaho.
