Five puppies (and their owners) escape Spokane Valley blaze early Friday morning

Ten dogs, including five puppies, escaped a house fire early Friday morning.

Firefighters arrived at the home, 6909 E. 8th Ave. at 4 a.m., according to a Spokane Valley Fire Department news release.

A man, a woman and their 10 dogs escaped. Craig Warzon, a spokesman for Spokane Valley Fire Department said the couple care for foster dogs. The dogs and their foster parents were unharmed.

“Nothing really outstanding (about the fire) other than the number of pets,” Warzon said.

The sound of breaking glass woke one of the residents, according to the release. The residents believe the fire started in the laundry room. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire spread to the attic, prompting more fire resources to the scene. Firefighters removed a “large amount of interior ceiling and insulation.”

A total of 13 vehicles and roughly 30 personnel responded to the fire. No firefighters were injured.
