Area roundup: Sasquatch men win, move into first place

Ian Schimandle scored 4:59 into the match and added a pair of second-half goals to propel the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (11-2-2, 8-1-1) to a 4-0 victory over the visiting Walla Walla Warriors (10-4, 7-3) in Northwest Athletic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday.

Cole Johnson also scored for CC Spokane, which moved into first place in the East Region, and Hector Magana added two assists.

Omar Hernandez scored with 3:46 remaining in the match and the North Idaho Cardinals (6-6-2, 5-3-2) notched a 2-1 victory over the visiting Columbia Basin Hawks in NWAC play.

Conner Kinnune also scored for the Cardinals. Oscar Padilla assisted on both goals.

Women’s soccer

Klarissa Barajas scored two of Walla Walla’s three second-half goals and the Warriors (16-0-1, 12-0) rallied for a 3-2 win over CC Spokane (11-4-1, 9-2-1) in NWAC action.

Peyton Vasquez and Cheris Brown scored for CCS.

Natalie Goetz and Chelsea Love scored goals and the North Idaho Cardinals (12-4, 10-2) notched a 2-0 win over the visiting Columbia Basin Hawks in NWAC play.

Volleyball

Codie Conching had a match-high 15 kills and the Whitman Blues (6-10, 6-5) pulled off a 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-16 upset over the visiting Whitworth Pirates (11-8, 8-3) in Northwest Conference action.

Cassandra Mendoza led the Pirates with 13 kills and 12 digs.

Ocean Bryan totaled 14 kills and Ashlin Orosco chipped in with 13 kills and seven digs to guide the visiting Walla Walla Warriors (22-14, 7-4) to a 25-12, 25-19, 25-14 sweep of CC Spokane (23-7, 7-4) in NWAC play.

Baylee Gorder topped the Sasquatch with six kills.
