Man dies after jumping onto moving train while fleeing police near Ritzville

A man fleeing from police near Ritzville died Tuesday when he jumped from an overpass and landed on a moving train, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, whose name is not being released, was being pursued by the Connell Police Department, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol. The chase crossed from Franklin County into Adams County and at one point spike strips were used.

The man’s red car came to a stop on Interstate 90 at mile post 238 near Ritzville after losing its tires. The man jumped out of the car, ran up an embankment and jumped off an overpass onto the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train. He died at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The incident is under investigation.
