POW story brings back memories of Philippines
Thank you for The Spokesman-Review article about Sharon Crawford Kromholtz (“She grew up in POW camp,” by Cindy Hval, Voice sections, Feb. 8). I, too, was a child in the Philippines when Pearl Harbor was bombed and spent the war years there as a POW. We were liberated from Los Banos “prison camp” on Feb. 23, 1945, by the 11th Airborne, from behind Japanese lines. No small miracle.
WWII veteran a good teacher, his former students says
Thank you for the article on Harold Debenham in today’s Valley Voice section of the paper (“WWII veteran teaches lineage research on web,” by Cindy Hval, Voice sections, Feb. 8). As a student at East Valley (class of ’71), I took metal shop and crafts classes from him.
I was thinking of him the other day.Now that I’m staring at a 65th birthday this summer, I figured he was probably long gone from this world.
How wonderful that he’s not only still with us, but still active and engaged with the world. He was a good teacher, and probably still is, judging from your article. Great that he also continued to learn and grow throughout his life.
He’s inspiring me all over again.
