Area roundup: Eastern Washington’s Delaney Hodgins eclipses 2,000 points in women’s basketball win

Delaney Hodgins scored 30 points and surpassed 2,000 for her career Thursday to power Eastern Washington to a 77-68 win over visiting Weber State in Big Sky Conference women’s basketball.

Hodgins finished 12 for 21 from the field and 4 for 4 from the free-throw line to become the first Eagles player, man or woman, to eclipse 2,000. She finished the night with 2,007.

Hodgins added nine rebounds to guide a 53-35 advantage.

The victory allowed the Eagles (14-13, 9-6) to tie Weber State (17-9, 9-6) for fourth place in the conference with three games left in the regular season.

Hodgins hit 2 for 5 on 3-pointers but the rest of the Eagles struggled during a 2-for-17 night.

Violet Kapri Morrow added 23 points for the Eagles, hitting 7 of 11 from the floor and 8 of 9 from the line. She added eight rebounds.

EWU outscored the Wildcats 19-4 from the line.

Weber State cut EWU’s lead to 60-54 with 6 minutes, 36 seconds left, but Hodgins had two baskets to fuel a 6-0 Eagles run.

Idaho State 62, Idaho 52: Grace Kenyon totaled 17 points and eight rebounds and the visiting Bengals (18-8, 10-5 Big Sky) snapped the Vandals’ nine-game winning streak and stopped Idaho (15-11, 11-4) from moving into a tie for first place.

Taylor Pierce and Geraldine McCorkell scored 14 points apiece for the Vandals, who shot 18 of 55 (32.7 percent) from the field, including 8 of 28 on 3-pointers. McCorkell added 14 rebounds and six assists.

Pierce’s 3-pointer with 4:01 left allowed the Vandals to cut ISU’s lead to 54-52, but Idaho didn’t score again. Kenyon hit a jumper, a layup and a free throw to boost the Bengals’ edge to 59-52 with 35 seconds left.

Idaho led 20-13 early in the second quarter after Isabelle Hadden’s jumper, but the Bengals closed the half with a 17-4 run.

Idaho boys basketball

St. Maries 64, Grangeville 56: Jackson Pritchard scored 17 points, and Dan Howard added 14 points and eight rebounds as the Lumberjacks (17-4) qualified for state by eliminating the Bulldogs (15-7) in Troy and taking their fourth consecutive 2A District 1-2 title.

The Lumberjacks will open 2A State play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Capital High in Boise against Nampa Christian.

Lake City 69, Coeur d’Alene 54: The visiting Timberwolves (13-11) eliminated the Vikings (12-11) in the final game of the 5A District 1-2 Tournament.

Lake City will play Boise in Grangeville on Saturday for a berth to state.

Indoor track and field

Eastern Washington senior Kendra Hamm placed fifth in the pentathlon as the Big Sky Conference Championships opened in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Hamm scored a personal-best 3,454 points to move up to second place on the Eagles’ all-time list. Jozie Kimes scored 3,499 in 2016.

Women’s swimming

Idaho senior Maren Seljevold placed third in 3-meter diving to help the Vandals maintain second place after the second day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Houston.

Seljevold posted a score of 298.85 in finals for her best finish in any conference championship event.

Idaho has 237 points, 18 ahead of third-place Grand Canyon but well behind leader Northern Arizona (380).
