Area basketball: Mikayla Ferenz scores 39 points to spark Idaho women to victory
Junior Mikayla Ferenz scored 39 points, two shy of her school record, on Saturday to power the Idaho Vandals to a 101-90 Big Sky Conference women’s basketball win at Portland State.
Ferenz finished 13 of 21 from the floor, including 8 of 13 on 3-pointers, shot 5 of 5 from the free-throw line and added seven assists. She scored 41 points last year at Northern Arizona.
Geraldine McCorkell scored 23 points for the Vandals (6-9, 2-2), shooting 9 of 14 from the field, and added seven rebounds. Idaho’s Taylor Pierce hit five 3-pointers on the way to 22 points and added eight rebounds and four steals.
Ferenz hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Vandals seized a 25-12 lead.
Idaho shot 68 percent from the floor in the third quarter to hold off a Vikings rally. McCorkell scored 13 points in the fourth quarter when Ferenz took the bench with four fouls.
Ashley Bolston lead three Vikings (8-6, 2-1) in double figures with 22 points.
Eastern Washington 83, Sacramento State 72: Delaney Hodgins scored 27 points to move into second place on the school’s career scoring list and the Eagles (7-9, 2-2 Big Sky) shot a season-high 49.2 percent from the field while defeating the Hornets (3-11, 1-2) in Sacramento, California.
Hodgins, who added nine rebounds, six assists and four steals, has 1,745 career points and needs 91 points to top the record set by her older sister, Hayley.
Symone Starks and Violet Kapri Morrow added 15 points for the Eagles, and Brittany Klaman hit three 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 12.
EWU used a 15-3 run to lead 21-14 after one quarter. After the Hornets closed within one point in the third quarter, the Eagles had runs of 14-3 and 7-0 to build a 16-point lead.
Hannah Friend hit five of the Hornets’ 13 3-pointers and finished with 26 points.
Pacific 80, Whitworth 72: Liana Tanaka led four players in double figures with 21 points, hitting three 3-pointers and all six of her free-throw attempts, to guide the visiting Boxers (2-10, 1-3) past the Pirates (6-7, 1-3).
Courtney Carolan added 13 points, nine rebounds and five steals for Pacific, which entered the fourth quarter tied at 56.
Camy Aguinaldo scored a game-high 22 points for the Pirates, who struggled with a 6-for-29 effort from long range. Alli Kieckbusch added 19 points, shooting 8 of 15 from the floor, and Madison Moffat had 12 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Whitworth trailed 72-70 with 1:44 left, but the Boxers went on a 7-0 run to take control.
North Idaho 84, Yakima Valley 63: Cierra Dvorak scored 20 points and Whitney Meir added 19 off the bench to lead the visiting Cardinals (10-3, 1-0 Northwest Athletic Conference) past the Yaks (10-4, 0-2).
Dvorak shot 8 of 10 from the line to lead NIC’s 17-for-21 effort. The Yaks were 11 of 26 on free throws.
Meir shot 6 of 11 from the field, including 3 of 7 from long range.
NIC outscored the Yaks 26-4 in the paint and held a 33-12 edge in bench points.
Yakima Valley’s Kamri Von Oelhoffen scored 21 points, hitting 5 of 9 on 3-pointers, and had a game-high five steals.
Treasure Valley 68, CC Spokane 65: Paige Vorwaller finished with team highs of 19 points and eight rebounds and the Chukars (7-6, 2-0 NWAC) overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat the Sasquatch (9-4, 0-2) at Spokane Community College.
CCS led 26-12 in the first quarter, but TVCC had an 18-2 run while storming back. Another big factor was the Chukars’ 14-0 advantage in bench points.
Vorwaller and Tara Chamberlain, who scored 16, were both 7 of 14 from the field for TVCC.
Rose Mongoyak led four Sasquatch in double figures with 20 points, shooting 10 of 14 from the floor. Shania Graham, who hit three 3-pointers, Jessica Olsen and Marissa Blair scored 12 apiece.
CCS’ Shaye Swannack finished with 16 rebounds, eight assists and three blocked shots. Graham and Olsen had four blocked shots apiece, leading the team to 13.
Men
CC Spokane 89, Treasure Valley 78: Cameron Gay and Isaiah Gotell scored 18 points apiece and the Sasquatch (11-4, 1-1 NWAC) outscored the Chukars 45-27 in the second half to win at SCC.
George Pilimai added 17 points for CCS, finishing 10 of 11 from the line. Gay, who added six assists, was 2 for 5 on 3-pointers while the rest of the team was 4 for 23.
The Sasquatch held TVCC to 10-for-32 shooting from the floor in the second half.
De’Marcco Alexander led the Chukars (5-8, 1-1) with 19 points, hitting half of the team’s six 3-pointers.
Yakima Valley 83, North Idaho 77: Gamaun Boykin scored a game-high 21 points, hitting 11 of 14 from the line, and the host Yaks (11-4, 2-0 NWAC) held off the Cardinals (10-4, 0-1).
The Yaks finished 21 of 27 from the line as the Cardinals were whistled for 11 more fouls (26-15). Yakima Valley shot 10 of 26 from long range while NIC misfired on 18 of 21 attempts.
Tyler Brimhall led three Cardinals in double figures with 17 points, hitting 8 of 14 from the floor. RayQuan Evans added 16 points and Jarod Greene had 13 before fouling out.
NIC outrebounded the Yaks 44-33, led by Conner Chapman’s 10.
NIC trailed 71-67 after Evans’ jumper with 2:06 left. Boykin hit four free throws to boost the Yaks’ lead to eight.
