Spokane Valley Summer Theatre heading ‘Into the Woods’

Spokane Valley Summer Theatre in 2018 will stage one full-length musical, present an evening of Broadway music and work with youngsters on three different shows.

The company, now in its third season, will go “Into the Woods” in late July. Stephen Sondheim’s fairy-tale musical will take over the Central Valley Performing Arts Center July 13-29. Company founder Yvonne A.K. Johnson will direct, with music direction from David Brewster.

Midway through that run, the company will produce “Broadway in Concert,” on July 25.

Tickets to both shows are on sale now, at $38 for adults, $36 for seniors adn $20 for students. Buy them at the SVST website.

Auditions for “Into the Woods” will be on March 23, and they’re looking for up to 30 actors. To make an appointment or for details, email the audition coordinator at

The company in past years has staged three shows. This season is being shortened somewhat because of news on two different fronts. First, Johnson is producing an Off-Broadway run of “My Brilliant Divorce,” starring “Little House on the Prairie” star Melissa Gilbert, for the Fallen Angel Company through mid-April. Also, the Central Valley theater wing will be undergoing some work on its heating and air conditioning system, according to a news release.

The Acting Conservatory will offer a series of weeklong camps for kids entering grades three through eight in July. The young actors will work on “Harry Potter and Friends and Hogwarts Home” (July 9-13), “The Stories of Dr. Seuss” (July 16-20) and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (July 23-27).
