Education notebook: 2018 Chase Youth Awards honorees named

The 2018 Chase Youth Awards were held March 8 at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox. Students were honored for their outstanding community involvement and leadership in order to recognize them as community role models.

The honorees, by category, are:

Arts and Creativity: Ben Lewis of Lewis and Clark High School (teen) and Strolling Strings of East Valley High School (teen group).

Community Involvement: Avery Norwood of Jefferson Elementary (elementary), Lincoln Heights K-Kids Club (elementary group), Molly Herzog of Lewis and Clark High School (teen) and On Track Academy Student Leadership Team (teen group).

Compassion: Taven Tollefson of Hutton Elementary (elementary), Garfield Elementary Vision Program Students (elementary group), Grace Wear of Sacajawea Middle School (middle school) and Marissa Pounds of North Central High School (teen).

Cultural Awareness: John David “Jack” Culpepper of Roosevelt Elementary (elementary), Khanh Nguyen of Rogers High School (teen) and Nk’wu Nation Native Student Leadership Club of Rogers High School (teen group).

Innovation: Dylan Pearson of Ferris High School (teen).

Leadership: Alisha Hains of Lincoln Heights Elementary (elementary), Roosevelt Leadership (elementary group), Tayla Tollefson of Chase Middle School (middle school), Cameron Fahsholtz of Lewis and Clark High School(teen) and Lewis and Clark Hiking Club (teen group).

Personal Achievement: Cameron Rehkow of Evergreen Middle School (middle school), Patrick Cody of East Valley High School (teen) and Freeman High School Senior ASB and Shooting Survivors (teen group).

Social Advocacy: Shyanne Weston of Seth Woodard Elementary School (elementary), Kiley Krant of East Valley High School (teen) and Rogers High School AVID Ambassadors (teen group)

Jim Chase Asset Builder Adult Award: Spokane Police Department Community Outreach Unit.

Youth Commissioners Choice: Malia Fay of Deer Park High School.

Judges Choice Individual: Collin Pittmann of Rosalia High School.

Judges Choice Group: Central Valley Key Club.

WV student third

in trumpet festival

Lily Goodwin, a sophomore student and trumpet player at West Valley High School, was one of eight trumpeters who recently participated in the 2018 All-State Wind Ensemble in Yakima. She also placed third in the Regional Trumpet Solo festival, where she competed against high school trumpet players from Eastern Washington of all WIAA classifications.

St. George’s presents one-act plays

Tonight St. George’s School drama department opens “Three Takes on Shakespeare,” a collection of three one-act plays poking fun at the immortal “Bard of Avon.” The plays include, “When Shakespeare’s Ladies Meet,” “The Audition,” and “The Actor’s Nightmare,” concluded by “34 Second Hamlet.”

Performances continue to run Friday and Saturday. All shows are 7 p.m. and free of charge. Presented in Founders Theater at St. George’s School, 2929 W. Waikiki Road.
