The 2019 college football season hasn’t even begun but Carroll College is already off to a rocky start. The school announced last night they’ve parted ways with their previous pick for the open assistant coach position, Jay Staggs, due to recent allegations that he sent inappropriate texts to student athletes. According to the Idaho State Journal, Idaho State University received a complaint from a current football player who stated he had received “inappropriate communication from a coach,” who was later identified as Staggs. While the investigation is still ongoing, Carroll Athletic Director Charlie Gross released the following statement:

“After learning of recent news regarding Jay Staggs, his employment with the fighting saints will not begin. It’s paramount that we find a quality football coach with outstanding character to work with our student athletes and Carroll College.” The search for a new assistant is already underway. This comes after Hall of Fame former head coach Mike Van Diest announced his retirement. The school announced the new head coach Troy Purcell back in December.
